Why does limestone performance vary (even when it looks the same)

Two limestone products can look identical in a bag, yet behave very differently in use. That is because performance is not only about how white or how hard the stone looks – but it also comes down to measurable factors that influence how limestone reacts, handles and performs in your application.

Most performance issues trace back to one of these:

  • Chemistry (what it is made of)
  • Particle size distribution (PSD) (how fine and consistent it is)
  • Moisture and handling behaviour (how it stores, flows and feeds)
  • Impurities and variability

The 4 practical checks that matter most

1) CaCO3 content and chemistry

Limestone is mainly calcium carbonate (CaCO3), but small differences in chemistry can affect consistency and suitability.

Depending on your application, you may care about:

  • CaCO3 or CaO potential
  • MgCO3 or MgO (especially if dolomitic content matters)
  • Trace elements (industry-specific compliance requirements)

2) PSD and fineness (reactivity and performance live here)

Particle size is one of the biggest drivers of performance because it controls surface area.

  • Finer limestone typically reacts faster and more uniformly.
  • Coarser material may react slower but can improve handling (less dust, better flow)

3) Moisture

Moisture is often overlooked until a plant starts fighting poor flow in hoppers, build-up in chutes, inconsistent feeding rates or bagged product hardening during storage.

Even small moisture differences can change how the product behaves in transport and storage.

4) Impurities and variability (the real cost is inconsistency)

Many limestone issues show up not because the product is bad, but because it is variable.

A common mistake is choosing limestone based on one property only (like CaCO3% or colour). The better approach is matching the grade to the application need, such as:

  • High reactivity grade: when fast reaction and uniform behaviour matter
  • Low-dust / better-flow grade: when feeding and handling reliability matter
  • General purpose grade: where a balance of cost and performance is key
